What Are You Waiting For?
During all this stress fairly normal questions are coming up including: if I’ve been saving something for a random “rainy day or “special occasion” should I use it? There are 2 primary schools of thought to go with this. 1: “I’ll save this for a unnamed special occassion in the future, I don’t know when’s it’s coming but today is just a ‘normal day”. 2: “We’re saving that bottle of champagne for my sibling’s graduation this spring, oh, and that chocolate is for the 30th day in quarantine.” See the difference? So, if you’re not saving something for a specific event/occurance consider using the good towels and dishes, eating the…

The Actual Reason People are Scared of Changes
because often change means a loss. A ton has changed in the past year. If you’ve read any of my other posts. You know the full story of that. I’ve also learned that I’ve been fortunate to experience some fun changes and that the fact that they’ve been happy changes has been part of what makes them easier to handle. After talking with the rest of the youth group leadership team at my church, I realized why the changes have been relatively easy for me – because there hasn’t been much loss; and I am so grateful for that. Change is tough, especially when it means a loss that you…

It Was Objectively Interesting
It’s been 4 weeks since my adventure at The Objective Standard Conference (TOS_Con) in Park City, Utah, but I just realized I hadn’t written a blog post about it yet. I t was such a great adventure, and although, smaller, longer, and different from FEE-Con it was also very valuable. I learned a lot. I also had a ton of fun, that said FEECon was a better conference, it helped that there were more young people there. TOS-Con had some amazing and unique sessions. Some were more interesting to me than others, and some I admittedly didn’t enjoy but there were others I was ecstatic about. I used to hate…

What could you teach through images? Or do you just need words?
Everyone knows that old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words”. I’ll add to that that a memory may be worth a thousand pictures, but I really do like pictures. That said, what could you teach through images? Could you draw a doodle to help a child understand something simple like the water cycle? Could you show a friend an image of your trip to convince them to join you on the next one? Could you use screenshots and diagrams to teach your Grandma how to use her smartphone more effectively so you could easily chat more? Maybe you would rather teach with words, I get that. For instance,…

What could you teach through stories?
I learned a lot at FEEcon this past weekend, and although I won’t be able to repeat all of it, here are some more thoughts. Think about how real people consume information. Through stories, there may be some of us that are compelled by cold hard facts, but the general population likes the personalization that stories often bring, even if its in addition to facts. Creating stories often makes for content that is more interesting to watch and/or engage with. It then often leads to more sharing of said content. Although this isn’t always the case, it’s often an asset. Take digital providers, ie the Netflixs and Hulus, and even…

Don’t stop with awesome, keep going.
I learned a lot at FEEcon this past weekend, and although I won’t be able to repeat all of it, here are some more thoughts. One of my favorite speakers was Dewitt Jones, a National Geographic photographer who did his first film project at 23 and has traveled the globe grabbing wonderful shots and learning about his skills along the way. See his website here: https://dewittjones.com/ (all quotes in this post are from Jones’) I want to share some of what he shared during his keynote presentation and add some of my own analysis. “Don’t be competitive with anyone else, you have your own set of skills.” (paraphrased). Understand that…

What Have You Got To Lose?
If you try something, apply to something, ask something etc. Often times there is a lot to lose by making a certain choice, whether that’s time, money, or resources, or maybe even relationships, but that doesn’t mean there always is, or that it outweighs the wins. When I apply for jobs I realize that sending in an application hardly hurts me. It takes a couple of minutes, and I could find my dream job. That said, I really like responding to job openings that ask for a “Google Jobs” form reply or an email reply, it allows for either a streamlined process or plenty of information and creativity. When I…

High Heels Are Like…
Some are classier than others some are taller than others, but even since getting taller I realized I kind of enjoy wearing high heels sometimes. I like dressing up for certain events and church, and its a fun way to literally and figuratively elevate a look. Today I realized how high heels relate to a Christian faith. Hear me out. The heels I own I’d like to think are pretty but after a few hours, they do tend to hurt my feet. I like how I can see more because they make me taller than others, but sometimes I let that get to my head, and I tend to be…

Living with Razor Sharp Convictions
What a great weekend its been at District Blitz! From helpful seminars and rallies to great moments with students and leaders alike. This weekend and the students have taught me things. Leadership should be a life of good examples not just telling people what is good and bad. It should be about not only correcting mistakes when they happen but also avoiding them by the way you lead. I went to a great seminar about convictions and I loved that the speaker talked about how important it is to stand by your Bible based/fact based convictions, but how to approach others with them as well. You shouldn’t hurt people with…
