When You Want to Avoid the Tough Moments

I was watching a YouTube video from one of my favorite commentators recently. The last thing he said in the video was “Just because at some point it may hurt, it doesn’t mean that it’s not a gift, and you don’t have the right to throw it all away.” (Steven Crowder) We all go through tough moments, but we have to remember the good things as well.

He was mainly talking about his dog’s cancer diagnosis. To a certain extent, I knew where he was coming from because I lost my dog, Jack, to cancer back in college. Many of us have pets, and even though it can be hard to go through their passing, we have to remember all the joy they brought us and others, and we can’t throw that out the window.

Crowder added that “Pain doesn’t want to be alone.” (Crowder) He mentioned that his dog was okay at the time when another person’s pet was needing to be put down, instead of happily stating that his dog was doing better, he came alongside this person and said that his dog still had the medical problems. I’ll add here that out right lying doesn’t help but admitting that you’re both in an imperfect spot could be just what they need as long as you’re not directly comparing.

We need to offer solutions to the tough moments was something else Crowder touched on, this means finding the joy outside of the moment, and see the bigger picture. Say you are having money struggles, finding free things that give you joy could help soften that problem a little.

Don’t avoid tough moments, that may come from good. Don’t avoid getting another pet, if you know you’ll be excited to rescue a new furry friend, don’t avoid moving away just because you won’t see people as often, don’t avoid trying something new just because you’re afraid of the challenge it will bring.
