    An Honorable Welcome

This past Saturday my whole family went to the airport to pick up my grandpa from the airport. He finally got the chance to participate in Honor Flight Twin Cities. It’s a one day trip for World War II, Korean, and Vietnam veterans to see the memorials that are in Washington DC in their honor. Many of my family members went to the airport last weekend to welcome him home from the trip. It was a wonderful evening with fun surprises! And what a trip it was! My grandpa, and my great-uncle, who accompanied him on the trip, flew out of the airport at 6:00 in the morning. They got…

    It Was Objectively Interesting

It’s been 4 weeks since my adventure at The Objective Standard Conference (TOS_Con) in Park City, Utah, but I just realized I hadn’t written a blog post about it yet. I t was such a great adventure, and although, smaller, longer, and different from FEE-Con it was also very valuable. I learned a lot. I also had a ton of fun, that said FEECon was a better conference, it helped that there were more young people there. TOS-Con had some amazing and unique sessions. Some were more interesting to me than others, and some I admittedly didn’t enjoy but there were others I was ecstatic about. I used to hate…

What Have You Got To Lose?

If you try something, apply to something, ask something etc. Often times there is a lot to lose by making a certain choice, whether that’s time, money, or resources, or maybe even relationships, but that doesn’t mean there always is, or that it outweighs the wins. When I apply for jobs I realize that sending in an application hardly hurts me. It takes a couple of minutes, and I could find my dream job. That said, I really like responding to job openings that ask for a “Google Jobs” form reply or an email reply, it allows for either a streamlined process or plenty of information and creativity. When I…

Extra! Extra! Dance Is What It’s All About

Today I got the chance to be an extra on a movie set that was filming in my area. It was just an event one of my friends found on Facebook. I don’t know much about the film except they wanted 1940s swing dancing in the film – my specialty. The film is set in the 1940s at a dance hall so the filmmakers made an event on Facebook calling for extras that would are dancers. I only had a partial day of work so I decided why not show up? It’s nothing particularly fancy from what I can tell but it’s still going to be a great film, plus…

    Types of (Swing) Dance

I love learning dances. Now I want to share a list of dances and some links to helpful resources so you can know what you’re getting yourself into with various kinds of dance. I’ve included the one’s on this list as their the one’s I’ve tried at one point or another. East Coast: The easy to learn dance, that is easier to add aerials to. I’ll add that this video doesn’t show the absolute basic step, it shows some fun turns and spins thought. With easy cost and Lindy hop (below) it is said that you kind of dance into the floor, in order to balance correctly and keep the…

    Swing Style

So on this blog, I’ve already talked about how I got into swing dancing, and where to find dances, now I want to show you an idea of what to wear, so you’ll have even more tools for when you get to go. For Ladies: I wear skirts, and dresses 90% of the time I go swing dancing, I think it’s more fun, and usually more practical. Though sometimes it gets a little cold, especially on route to an event. I usually go with a more fitted top, with short or long sleeves and a crew or collared neckline. The shirt shown here is from Target. Keep jewelery minimal especially…

    How to Try (Swing) Dancing

I tell all my friends, and really anyone who will listen to try dancing, specifically swing dancing. Though I realize I’ve only verbally given those people ideas, so here’s the post that will show you the basics. If you attend a university first see if your school has a club, its a great way to meet people. Plus most clubs find social dances to attend as a group anyway.  If You’re Somewhere Else Facebook is a surprisingly great first place to check for dances, just look at events and type in swing dance (or some variation thereof) and look up the places that pop up online. If you want to…

    Swing Dancing: A Hobby

Swing dancing is a fun way for me to stay active, hang out with friends, listen to fun music, and develop a rather unique skill. It’s something that anyone who can walk could, in theory, take up to some extent. These days I go to swing dances as often as I can and try to learn stuff along the way. When I was a freshman in high school, I went to a youth group retreat, while there, there was an evening dance, complete with swing dance lessons, and a youth groups full of kids interested in learning how to dance. There I learned the basics of swing dancing for the…
