Prove It
I have a advisor that I learn a lot from, and often in unexpected ways. So I thought I’d just throw out a couple of their ideas here, paraphrased to make sense out of context. Talk, speak and get the part. Swift marketing thinking needs to translate to every part of your life, show your personality in every field you walk into. ‘You’re out there’ doesn’t mean you’re showing off, it shows that you’re doing work. Learn about each other’s strengths, and learn from those profiles. Go [through a fair and helpful] vetting process with who approaches you, for any reason. Remember your “haters” are your motivators. But not all your…

The “Not-Teacher” Who Taught
At one point during my elementary school years, I wanted to be a teacher, that idea soon fell away. It gave way to marketing, and even doctor for a really short time. Come high school and college I told everybody I never wanted to teach. Now the tricky part was differentiating myself from those who though I was going to be a teacher, probably mostly because that’s what my sister’s going to school for. So I calmly would tell them: “No, no, no, that’s my sister, I could never be a teacher.” Usually that was the last of it and I had convinced myself. Fast forward and I’ve helped in…

Have a Conversation – with the Hiring Manager
Last night was Praxis Wednesday, and it was a interview seminar with Johnny Roccia. Johnny is a hiring manager who helps us Praxians learn about how best to interview. He’s so down to earth while providing practical advice as well. The main takeaway I had from last night’s conversation was to have a conversation with the interviewer. The more you can show personality and “vibe” with them the better off you are. After all, they want to hire someone, they just need to know if you’re that person or not. You can add on to your conversation stand out questions, as well as personal questions for the interviewer. Something that…

What’s Required for a Flower to Thrive
I heard a song the other day that inspired me to think about the trials we go through in life in a new way. Sometimes we may think all we want in life is sunshine, but we really need to rain to be complete people. Allow me to explain. Flowers look beautiful in the sunshine, you can stop and smell the roses for as long as you like when it’s sunny. But it’s almost obvious to remember that while that flower was growing it needed to be stuck out in the rain to thrive. It had to be around for the gloomy days. If a flower only knows sunshine it will…

Read and Be Okay with Relearning
I got a new temp job this week, and while talking with one of my coworkers, I realized I had mentioned something twice and he replied with something that actually struck me as very valuable, even if it’s sometimes obvious – you should always be ready to relearn good lessons and read more. Relearning things can give us a new perspective on what we may already know something about. Relearning something you previously found valuable means your willing to invest more time into improving your knowledge on the subject and I believe that’s wise. Relearning can help us better understand what we thought we may have known. I think the best example…

Philosophy Module Week 4
I just finished the last of the content for the philosophy module in Praxis. We had two blocks of content this week, a short video series called “Everything is a Remix”, and an essay series called “Software is Eating the World” I enjoyed the first more, but it helped that it was far more condensed and visual. I appreciated learning about what society can do with technology and learning from each other. I’ve put together my last analysis video and it is listed below. This week I was also challenged by my advisor to create an advice video for future Praxians and learners of philosophy in general (linked below as well).…

Celebrity, Influencer, Superstar, Person
I’ve heard all of these terms throughout my life but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that the all the people described by the first three are also just the last as the same term. No one person is more important than another in the grand scheme of things. There is a difference between the first three but they’ve all managed to make their words very valuable to others whether they should be or not. Now I admit I still enjoy the work of some celebrities. From different musicians to good actors. I enjoy elements of pop culture. Though I tend to not, and try to not obsess over celebrities…

Why You Should Change Your Car Oil Regularly
I certainly don’t claim to be an expert on cars, but I have learned a couple of lessons since getting my license at 16, owning two separate vehicles, and commuting to college and now work. I love driving around especially with friends, or to places like camp, or my friends who live out of town. So I strive to keep my vehicle in top shape. Everyone wants to make their car last, and oil changes are a relatively easy and cheap way to help make that happen. Oil changes help your car run more efficiently. They also keep your engine cleaner, and effective. So if you like your car, or at…

Review of Everything is a Remix – Episodes 3 and 4
Ideas transform over time. In the last half of the short series Everything is a Remix, we learn about the basic elements of creativity and how things truly come into existence. Ideas are built from one another, and to hold an idea captive and say it’s yours is protected by law, but not always clear or helpful. The basic steps to cultivating creativity start with copying, yes, copying, as you have to learn how to do something before you can create your own, as noted previously many of the most successful people have done this. The next step is to transform that is, make it look unique, the the last…

Review of Everything is a Remix – Episodes 1 and 2
Everything is a remix – it only starts with music. Now anyone in any field can do. This week for the Praxis philosophy module part of our lesson is watching a series called Everything is a Remix. It’s the fascinating analysis of pop culture and how ideas are far more intertwined than we’re often led to believe. The series starts with the story of the Led Zeppelin band, and it’s music, how much of it is covers or remakes. What’s most interesting is that when others remixed there work they fought back against it. Music is often switched around, speed up, slowed down, or cut and pasted throughout various songs. It’s…
