Week Nine at a Start-Up

“We’re like Uber for business to business deliveries.”

This is one of the first things I mention on the phone, and often when people hear this they’re intrigued – as I was when I first heard about Dispatch.

I really like working at Dispatch, the people are great, the culture is great, the product is great!

So here are my thoughts from the first nine weeks. This is a non-exhaustive list mind you.

Things I learned

  • How to use Hubspot CRM
  • How to use Zoominfo
  • How to continue improving on my phone communication skills
  • How to schedule out a normal work day

Things I did for fun

  • Went to the state fair with the whole company
  • Enjoyed a cookout with the company and I got to chat with the CEO over lunch
  • Got to go to Utah for a conference
  • Connect with small groups at church, and my sr high students
  • Enjoyed time at the lake with my extended family
  • Spent time with friends

Personal goals I achieved

  • Got pre-approved for a mortgage
  • Created a complete budget
  • Called 50 businesses in one day at work
  • I became an official member of my church of a decade GracePoint church, where I’ll be doing another year of senior high ministry volunteering.
  • I found another church to contribute to with something I have come to value that GracePoint doesn’t have yet. Young adult ministry at Wooddale Church. I will be volunteering with my own age group during the service.

I have a lot to learn in my new job still, but I am excited to improve. I am thrilled to see where Dispatch goes. From which city we’ll open next, to what new companies I’ll be able to welcome to the Pittsburgh client list, to everything else the company is working to achieve.

One of the things I did this week to create value was I had a personal record number of call crushes with coworkers. I did this in an effort to reach more places and get more feedback from my colleagues about those calls.

I learned that sales and marketing are more connected than my previous opinions allowed for. Marketing drives sales, and it works the other way around. I think to a large extent the product and the marketing/branding drives how we communicate on the sales floor. Without a core brand, there isn’t anything to share to customers.

As for general life, I’m on the condo search, a place that will be mine to share with family, friends, and all my favorite things. I can’t wait to have everything from dinner parties, to (video game) nights, and sleepovers with friends even. I have everything ready at my parent’s house for the move; from dishes, to a dining table, to art, to an end table, to comfy chairs, a tv, and honestly most everything I’ll need except the kitchen sink. I’m so thankful that I’ve been able to already find what I need to fill my own space. Now, I just need to be praying for God to make the right place available.

I’m working for my Dad on the weekends in order to keep all my other skills sharp and to ensure that my family’s business can continue to thrive. Check out the new travel ideas page we added with blog posts!

I’m looking forward to this ministry year at both my churches, especially since both see the value in my participating in ministry at both. It will be unique but especially with a move coming up it will be nice to have a church to go to that is really close to where I’m moving that I already love, but I love my home church and plan to still be a semi-regular attendee especially with my students.

So why 9 weeks?

I learned a lot, and did a lot and wanted to share it. Happy Saturday all.

Disclaimer: I sell for Dispatch I don’t drive for them. I do commute though and my car is in a company color so it seemed like a great option for a picture.
