All Squared Away

I tried a new form of dancing this past weekend: square dancing! I went to “barn dance” with some friends from church, and within a few minutes of arriving we overheard that it would be primarily square dancing, I was a bit daunted by this new style, and admittedly waiting for a swing dance portion to the evening, but the square dancing turned out to be super fun!

To be honest, I hadn’t known what square dancing really involved before, that or I didn’t remember if I had learned it previously learned in middle school or something.

I had never realized what it took to square dance: eight people who all know what they’re doing to a certain extent, a song with the right beat, and a caller. The caller is someone who knows the moves, and the right beat, they can also call out “commands” in time, there may be a technical term for this but what I’m referring to is how someone has to call out instructors for all 8 in the square to dance out…it’s more fun than it sounds. In fact, once you know the commands you don’t have to plan and you just dance along to the beat. You get to spin around, travel around the square, and hop/skip along to the beat in general.

I may have gone into this dance not expecting to enjoy the dancing much, but this experience proved me wrong.

That said I still like swing dancing better, but I’ll be looking to “Doosie Do” and “spin yer partner round n’ round” more often 🙂

Thanks to the person at the dance who took my group’s picture.
