The Story of the Rich Young Ruler

This morning in Sunday school, we talked about the story of the rich young ruler, from the New Testament. It’s a tough thing to think about.

America is amongst the riches of nations, therefore the people in it are pretty well off, especially in light of the rest of history, we live better, eat better, travel far easier, and in general, we’re far better off than anyone else. With that in mind, we have to think about how this story applies to our lives.

In class, we did get the chance to talk about how some people who are rich bless others immensely, this is important to consider especially since money is sometimes not the primary stuggle a Christian has in their life.

One thing we didn’t get the chance to talk about is that we’re told to work for man as if working for the Lord, and when we do a good job we get paid for it, that doesn’t mean there are exceptions, it means that often we get money or “riches” for doing a good job, and that can be a very good thing.

Money shouldn’t be the focus of our lives – I think that’s a great takeaway from this passage, but there’s always more to learn.

During the service hour the pastor talked about the grace and truth of Christ and one of the last points of the sermon was that because of His grace you can come as you are, but because of His truth you can have confidence, He’ll keep His promises. I think this was helpful in helping me realized my desire for truth is not bad, it just needs to be combined with grace inspired by God.

Trust God, and the rest will fall into place. To read the Biblical text click here.
