Home Sweet Search

I’ve been looking at realtor websites for like over a year, but I finally got approved for a mortgage. Just today I looked at my first two homes. Thankfully my folks were able to come along.

It’s crazy how the last time I moved was nearly a decade ago. Our whole family participated in that search back when I was in middle school, we tried to all go to the showings, and we would imagine living there and see past cosmetic imperfections. In fact, we had to be in the selling and search process for about a year and a half, but that’s a story for another day.

The first place I looked at was not impressive. Although I suspected that going in, I wanted to see at least two places on this first home showing today. Not only to get multiple perspectives but to see how different setups work in a space with a given footprint. The second place I looked at was far more promising and showed awesome potential.

It was a little bit of deja vu for my parents walking into the second as they both immediately recognized the layout as looking nearly identical to their first apartment, and the first place I lived with them when I was born. That said obviously I don’t remember but it meant that they told me a similar space worked for all three of us well, and they felt confident this one or something similar could work for me at this stage of my life as well.

I’m excited to continue with this journey and hopefully find something soon. I’ve gotten to the point where I can almost instantly envision my furniture and styling in any given place I see in real life or in person. Sometimes that’s not a good thing because I haven’t been actually able to move yet, but I think it will prove to be a valuable talent as I continue my formal search.

I’m not buying a perfect place, and that’s on purpose. By buying a place that may have ugly wall color, maybe more vintage styling, and perhaps older fixtures, I hope to save a lot. I also plan make updates that fit exactly what I want as I can afford them. I can also paint my walls before moving in with my best friend. I want a place that I can decorate with my own stuff and style.
