Wardrobe Maintainence
So last year, I went all year without buying anything for my closet, with two exceptions. I bought a Vikings jersey at the thrift store for $1.75 and I bought new sneakers in time for my LA trip for $120. Other than that I didn’t have anything new to wear unless I was given it, which was the case a number of times I’ll admit as well.
What a challenge this was! But I appreciated how much I saved, and how much I experimented with what I already own. There’s also some other maintenance and organization tools that I make use of in wardrobe upkeep.
I have a simple, boxy closet system in my current room, for reference.
Put a spin on it: Some how this first happened in December of 2017 so its now a December occasion for me. I twist all my shirt hangers so that the hanger ends face the front. once I wear an item it gets turned to the front. Many people use this as a way to get rid of clothes, which is an awesome goal, but in my case of not buying clothes for the year, I learned what I wanted to make sure to wear more, though I did get ride of at least 5 shirts anyway.
Seasonal Store Strategy: I used to have a winter clothes box, but this habit allowed for way too much clothes collecting, not I just have two shirt length designations, and shorts are stored in a drawer and pants are hung. Dresses are more technical, but I keep them all in my closet.
Folder Fashionably: You know the fold you see in retail stores for t-shirts? Well, that’s what I use, because I don’t have space for the KonMari Method in my drawers. that way the design isn’t as folded on. Same goes for most sweaters especially to avoid hanger shoulder bumps.
The Floor is Fine: For Shoes that is, unless you have a spot-on
Belt Spot: If you don’t own more than 10 belts, I actually hang mine on the hanger, this strategy a little messy but it keeps them relatively easy to reach and just above my shoes for matching.
Satchel Stack: I literally pile backpacks and set smaller handbags on top… let me know if you have a better solution.
Blanket Bundle: I keep blankets stacked in my closet as well. Mostly because that’s just where they fit.
