The Christian and The Doctor (Who)

Yesterday I wrote about how as a Christian this world is only my home for a little while. Oddly enough the idea of this world not being my home makes me think of one of my favorite shows: Doctor Who.

The main character, the doctor, is an alien who really only travels to Earth to help and make friends knowing she doesn’t plan to stay. I think this might be one of the reasons why I like the show so much, and why I am so inspired by the doctor. It isn’t a Christian show by any means, and its far from a perfect example of the point, but I think seeing the doctor’s actions and attitude brings a good perspective.

The doctor helps out without demanding credit, while trying her hardest to do what’s right. She helps out even though Earth is not her home and even though she’s been deeply hurt in the past she respectfully moves on understanding that people continue to be thankful for her help.

She makes friends and challenges each of them to take unexpected paths. She cares for her friends but also lets them discover things for themselves. She cares enough for her friends to also realize that sometimes she needs o let them continue on in life without her.

She’s not mean to any one and always trying to be fair. Although she faces enemies on the show she tries her best to help them see the error of their ways, even though she knows when she has to defeat them and understand that they’re evil.

She Also understands that everyone is important, no matter what they do or who they are. I think this is the best element of the show. She understands that celebrity is not what makes a person important, it’s their humanity, and I would add that its also because God loves them and created them.

Now I don’t like everything about this show, nor do I agree with everything on the show. It’s not perfect but nothing here on Earth is so I decide to enjoy the show for what its worth taking the good elements with me, while critically thinking about it at various points to realize the show’s faults.

Outside of the deeper elements I love how this show has a little bit of everything: adventure, science, technology, romance, friendship, mystery, all without sleazy humor or content, it has its scary moments but I watch those episodes during the day.

So if any of that sounds interesting, try an episode and see what you think, you might find yourself becoming the newest whovian (the fandom title).

If you’re curious, Matt Smith is my favorite version of the doctor (hence the bowtie photo ie. his costume on the show), and Clara Oswald is my favorite companion character.
