Cold Turkey

Quitting things is hard even if its tiny habits like looking at your phone in bed, or eating candy.

I imagine that a lot of people wouldn’t recommend it, but it’s been helpful to me in the past, that is, quitting something cold turkey.

The ideas is that by quitting it completely is that you don’t have leeway to over do your limits, and that you can realize stark differences in your habits/lifestyle with certain changes.

The first time I can remember trying it with food was with a mediocre snack cake, it was something my family kept in the pantry and we all liked it too much. So one day I said I’d never eaten it again and I haven’t looked back. That is to say its hardly always that easy.

More recently for my 23rd birthday I stopped looking at screens once I had gone to bed. Although I’ve tried this habit before, I have more long-term goals for the habit this time around. Especially since I’ve found some good substitutes. I let myself watch videos close to bed, but not in bed, so I end up realizing I’ll have to move to sleep, which gets me off the tech in most cases.

In the future I hope I can utilize this element of self control, in more ways. From avoiding going on Facebook more than three times a day, to maybe cutting out some more unhelpful foods, to implementing things that I won’t allow myself to avoid.

By careful with going all in with something, and start out small, like one type of one thing, but then stick to it, and you may realize you’re better of for your choice and its better in the long run.
