Youth Group By Design

Back in high school, I had been part of brainstorming a couple t-shirt designs for my youth group. Now that I’m a leader I’ve decided to try my hand at it again, and hopefully learn a little myself even if my designs aren’t used. It’s interesting where design, specifically graphic design, can find a home in the world. It’s not just about logos or slapping a phrase on a sticker. Design can be about bringing a group together with a visual that was thuroughly considered and planned.

I like design. I’m trying to get better at it overall. I still tend to fall back on templates, but they get my brain churning. I often play with the colors anyways and inject my own flair. Design is a fun challenge in part because it’s so visual, but also because you can utilize color, text, imagery, and shapes. So to bring these elements and church together is quite fun.

I still love the shirts I had in high school, so to give the currents students something to wear at their schools or in general is awesome to think about. The primary thing I would love to see improved from when I was a senior higher is the wearability of the apparel, often it was made with so much focus on our theme that anywhere else it looked a bit out of context. I’m excited to see all the students wearing the new shirt at our next youth group retreat!
